PILOT AND COLLABORATIVE CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL STUDIES

The goal of the Pilot Studies program is to bring together investigators, laboratories, and financial support needed to initiate new research with high potential for external funding and serve as an administrative home for start-up funding for innovative interdisciplinary collaborative research projects. Bringing translationally-oriented pilot studies under the CTSI umbrella and adding new cross-discipline funding opportunities has been an enourmous boost to the clinical and translational research infrastructure at the University as a whole. Among the innovations are:
- Instituting a network of faculty research facilitators to aid in identifying cross-disciplinary groups around programmatic themes to address important clinical and translational problems.
- Developing a well-coordinated administrative structure to evaluate proposals and provide feedback to applicants.
- Providing guidance and mentoring for new investigators throughout the application process.
- “Buying” release time from clinical, administrative, or teaching commitments for scientists to identify collaborators, establish a team of co-investigators, and develop translational pilot projects.
