The goal of Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute Head and Neck cancer team is to establish a nationally recognized center of excellence dedicated to the compassionate and cutting edge, expert care for patients with tumors that arise in the head and neck region.  Our Head and Neck cancer team provides outstanding expertise in the area of all head and neck tumors. These include hypopharyngeal, laryngeal, neck, nasopharyngeal, oral (lip and mouth), sinus and nasal cavity, salivary gland, and skull base cancers.  We treat skin cancer that arises in the head and neck region.  We also specialize in the treatment of thyroid cancer whether newly diagnosed or recurrent.

Our head and neck  team is truly multi-disciplinary, including faculty members from the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, as well as medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, endocrinology, radiology, oncology nursing, psycho-social and palliative care.

We aim to cure patients with head and neck cancers, with as little functional and cosmetic impairment and toxicity as possible, by combining multiple therapies including expert surgical care, state-of-the-art radiation therapy techniques, and the newest chemotherapy drugs.  Expert reconstructive services accompany surgical and radiation therapy treatment, with particular emphasis given to aesthetics and function as well as clinical success.  Patients have many treatment options, including proven standards of care, as well as access to clinical trials.
The team also has organized collaborations with Penn State basic, clinical, and translational scientists involved in cancer research studies.

Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute Head and Neck fosters active collaborations among basic scientists in the laboratories and clinical investigators who work with patients.  This critical relationship enhances opportunities for translational research and clinical protocols in the treatment of head and neck and thyroid cancers.
