Mark H. Hassel Educational Endowment Fund

The Mark H. Hassel Educational Endowment Fund provides financial support for educational activities, clerkships, core lectures and residency programs in the field of dermatology.

On January 25, 2007, Mark H. Hassel, M.D., died after a 19-month battle with stomach cancer.  He was only 47 years old and leaves behind his wife, Jennifer and three children, Emily, Erin and Carson.  A native of Central Pennsylvania, Mark was born and raised in Lancaster County.  He was a gifted physician who was loved by his staff, patients and everyone who was lucky enough to have known him.  He will be remembered for his caring, compassionate nature nourished with humility, a rare sense of humor and infectious laugh.  It is in celebration of his intellectual curiosity and love of teaching that we ask you to consider making a tax deductible gift to a very special educational fund that is being established in his memory.  "The Mark H. Hassel Educational Endowment Fund for the Department of Dermatology."

Mark did his undergraduate training at Franklin & Marshall College followed by medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.  He completed a dermatology residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and subsequently a fellowship in Mohs micrographic and laser surgery at NYU Medical Center in New York City.  Upon completion of his training, Mark returned to Lancaster and established a thriving dermatology practice, following in the footsteps of his father.

Mark's dedication to education was evidenced by his active participation in many local and national medical societies, including the Pennsylvania Medical Society; Lancaster County Medical Society; American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.  He was also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the Penn State College of Medicine/Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and an enthusiastic participant of our monthly Grand Rounds.  He played such an important and valued role in the education of our residents and colleagues that it only seems right to honor his memory by creating an educational endowment that would carry on his educational quest.  "The Mark H. Hassel Educational Endowment Fund for the Department of Dermatology" is being established to provide ongoing resources dedicated to educational activities in the field of dermatology.

This endowment will be recognized annually at one of the Department of Dermatology's Grand Rounds focusing on dermatologic surgery and will benefit the entire Central Pennsylvania community through the continued education of Mark's colleagues in the surgical management of skin diseases.  We hope that you will join us in contributing to the establishment of this endowment.  We all value the example set by Dr. Hassel and wish to honor his memory in a way that celebrates his love of teaching, endless pursuit of knowledge and exceptional patient care.  We invite you to take this opportunity to support the educational enrichment of future generations of dermatologists as a lasting tribute to Dr. Hassel's own extraordinary example.
