Alan H. Schragger Fund

Alan H. Schragger Fund supports educational dermatology programs at Penn State College of Medicine, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, and enables the Department to offer expert clerkships and core lectures as well as one of the top residency programs in the nation.

The physicians of Advanced Dermatology Associates, Ltd., are proud to announce the establishment of an educational endowment to honor Dr. Alan H. Schragger as he retires from private practice.

On December 10, 2005, Advanced Dermatology Associates honored Dr. Schragger at a private reception, as he began a new chapter in his life.  During that-evening, we retired his Advanced Dermatology Physician "number," so that no future associate will be able to claim the number "1."  A jersey with his name and number will be hung in our office as a way of paying tribute to Dr. Schragger for all that he has done to benefit each of us.  Additionally, we also surprised him with the announcement of this educational endowment in his honor.

In recognition of Dr. Schragger's many contributions to dermatologic education, the "Alan H. Schragger Fund for Program Support in the Department of Dermatology" is being established at Penn State College of Medicine.  This endowed educational fund will provide ongoing resources to support educational activities in the field of dermatology.  It will enable the department to continue to offer some of the best clerkships and core lectures in the College of Medicine, as well as offering one of the best residency programs in the United States.  We have all been fortunate to have Dr. Schragger make a difference in our lives and for that we are grateful.  In honor of his years of service and dedication to the patients and families he has served, we are asking you to make a gift to this very special educational fund.

Dr. Schragger has been a prominent and active member of our community since he established his dermatologic practice in Allentown in 1963.  He served as a member of the Board of Directors at the Allentown Sacred Heart Hospital Center.  He was Chairman of the Board of the Leigh Valley Hospital, President of the Lehigh County Medical Society, and President of the Medical Staff at Allentown Hospital.  He served as Executive Producer of the weekly television show "On Call" and was a winner of the Scripts Howard Award and the AMA Award for medical television.  Of course, those who know him realize when he is not involved in medicine, he is sure to be engaging in his other passion...sailing!

Dr. Schragger graduated from Lehigh University cum laude, and attended the University of Chicago Medical School.  He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the West Side Veterans Administration followed by a residency in Dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine.  He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology and Syphilology.

Dr. Schragger was an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Division of Microbiology with research in immunology and has a number of publications in the field of dermatology and immunology.  He served as physician in charge of the dermatology clinics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital before moving to Allentown in 1963.  He was an Associate Professor at Hahnemann Medical School, then Professor at St. Francis DeSales University and at Drexel University Medical School.

An active member of the teaching staff at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Dr. Schragger is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Penn State University College of Medicine.  Because of his love of dermatology and interaction with the young physicians at the hospital, Dr. Schragger has been frequently named Dermatology Teacher of the Year.

We hope you will join in spirit as we wish Dr. Schragger well as he sets sail into retirement and thank him for his many contributions to our profession and our community.  Please consider honoring Dr. Schragger by contributing to the establishment of his endowment.  We all value Dr. Schragger for his passion, honesty, integrity, and commitment to outstanding patient care.  We invite you to take this opportunity to honor a world-class physician and support the educational experiences of future dermatologists.
