Penn State Hershey Diabetes and Obesity Institute Registry

Penn State Hershey Diabetes and Obesity Institute (PSHDOI) Registry system is a custom built application that assists in tracking clinical outcomes for diabetes patients.  This application is available in all Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Primary Care clinics, the Centre Medical and Surgical Associate Internal Medicine and Endocrinology Clinics, the Susquehanna Health Endocrinology Clinic, and the Centre Volunteers In Medicine Clinic (State College).

The Penn State Hershey Diabetes and Obesity Institute Registry is entirely web-based and can be accessed from any computer with high speed Internet access.

The Registry currently has approximately 17,000 patient registrants.  The automated Registry processes capture patients seen in any of the participating clinics by billing diagnostic code and automatically add them to the registry.  Additional processes import laboratory data from laboratory systems to provide the user quick access to new patient data.  Any additional data captured during a patient visit is data entered by staff.

The Registry is capable of collecting the following types of data for each patient:

  • Patient Demographics
  • Visit Data
  • Lab Data
  • Complications
  • Self Care Goals
  • Insulin and Other Medications

After data has been entered into the system, it can be accessed using the application’s reporting module.

Two main reports are available:

  • Overdue/Value Report which allows the user to query the database for patients either due for routine screening tests or those with laboratory values outside of a custom range.

  • Patient Profile which acts as a real-time flow sheet for tracking of clinical outcomes and provides reminders for tests that are due.

The Registry application was developed using Macromedia Coldfusion MX 7 and an Oracle 10g database.  The application utilizes 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption.  The SSL protocol provides data security layered between application protocols, such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).  Each user desiring access to the application must obtain a username and password.  The user’s access to information is restricted by pre-defined roles.

The registry is managed by  Scott Mincemoyer, R.N., B.S.   For registry access, click here.
