Family Faculty Program
Penn State Hershey Medical Center believes in working with families to educate hospital staff. Our Family Faculty program has been in existence since 2002 and was created by the original Family Advisory Council of the Children's Hospital. The program now also includes speakers who are adult patients and their family members.
Family Faculty members are trained patients and families who present to hospital staff on their experiences in the hospital/outpatient clinics. It helps for the hospital staff to hear different perspectives of the care they provide to patients and families.
Hospital Staff has raved about these interactions with Family Faculty:
“I found this session very enlightening. The family story and the vignettes really hit home, and helped me to understand what it means to practice in this manner [Patient and Family-Centered Care].”
“Your guest speaker- Caden's mom- was wonderful, informative, powerful and moving. Thank you for involving her.”
“Remembering the family is as much a part of the care as the patient- good reminder.”
"The family speaker was very powerful! Bonnie and Cody's story really explained how we as nurses can make a difference in the families' lives and promote the rehabilitation process. This was by far my favorite part of the program."
