Joint Appointments

Tenure-track and fixed-term faculty members in the College of Medicine may be granted joint appointments in another academic department of the College of Medicine.  The procedure is as follows:

 

  1. The Chair of the faculty member’s primary department and the Chair of the department in which the joint appointment is requested should send memos (or one jointly signed memo) to Dr. Carol Weisman, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, cweisman@psu.edu.

     

  2. The memo(s) should request the joint appointment and briefly state the reason for the request (e.g., to provide the faculty member with an appointment in a relevant discipline, to formalize ongoing collaborative activities).  The request should also include the effective date.

     

  3. An updated CV for the faculty member must be attached.

     

  4. The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs will notify the faculty member of approval of the joint appointment by letter, with copies to the Chairs.

     

Joint appointments should not be requested prior to the faculty member’s employment at the College of Medicine or Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

If a faculty member in the College of Medicine wishes to have a joint appointment in an academic department in another College within Penn State University, the faculty member should inquire about the procedure in that College.  Approval must be approved and granted by the Dean of both Colleges.
