Promotion & Tenure

Penn State faculty are appointed on either the tenure or non-tenure tracks. Academic titles are the same for both tracks. The review and decision procedures, however, are different for the two tracks.

• Tenure-track faculty are governed by Penn State Policy HR23: for more information see the Office of Faculty Affairs website.
• Non-tenure track faculty are usually appointed annually and are reviewed for promotion within their home department: for more information see your Chair or Departmental Administrator.

Annual Performance Review (HR40)

The performance of each faculty member (tenure & non-tenure tracks) is reviewed annually in the spring of each year, as required by Penn State Policy HR40: for more information see the Office of Faculty Affairs website.
