Global Health - GHSP Application
The Global Health Scholars Program (GHSP) is a competitive application-based process open to first year medical students attending Penn State's College of Medicine.
Due Date: November 1st
The GHSP Planning Team will select 4 highly-qualified medical student candidates for each site to participate in the GHSP. Students will be notified of their acceptance by December 31st. Top candidates may be asked to provide 2-references.
Selection will take into consideration academic achievement (students must be in the top 2/3 of their class); a well-written, organized, original essays that convey enthusiasm; prior international work experience; prior domestic community service work; the importance of global health to career goals; Spanish language skills; and personal strengths, among others.
Application Process:
1. The application will be made available on this page around mid-September.
2. Applicants complete and submit the application electronically using the Submit button at the end of the document. Applicants should review the information regarding each site on the GHSP Wiki. Also, applicants are highly encouraged to talk with GHSP faculty and current scholars. Contact Dr. Fredrick (nfredrick@psu.edu) to help arrange this if desired.
3. Each applicant will be interviewed by at least one Global Health Scholar
4. The faculty typically meet to review the applications at the end of November. Each applicant will receive notification after that meeting regarding acceptance. These letters are sent by email in the early part of December.
Scholars will need to provide their own funding to cover trip expenses. The anticipated costs are $2500 for the first year trip.
