University Manor Fire Protection Systems

  • Fire detection system
    • All University Manor East and West apartments are equipped with an automatic fire and smoke detection system.  The system is monitored 24 hours a day.  All alarms are reported immediately to our Building Operations Center (B.O.C.) who will dispatch the fire department, if warranted.
    • Smoke detectors are located in each apartment. The tone of the detector is quite shrill and may be disturbing.  You are advised to leave the apartment or go to the patio until the alarm is reset.  The smoke detector has a small red or green light which blinks on and off continuously.  This means that the system has power and is operational.  There is no mechanism available for you to check the detector without causing an alarm to be sent to the monitoring company and, subsequently, dispatching the fire department.  A bell mounted on the exterior of the building provides an audible warning to the other occupants of your building.  However, under true fire conditions you should also try to warn the other tenants. A strobe light is mounted below the bell. Its purpose is to aid the fire department in locating the proper apartment.
    • Tenants will not remove, disable, cover, or in any way tamper with installed fire detection and fire suppression systems and/or equipment. Any such action taken by the tenant or the tenant’s family or guest will be considered a breach of this Lease Agreement and will result in termination of this Agreement.
    • NON-EMERGENCY SITUATION:
      • IF YOUR ALARM SHOULD GO OFF FOR A NON-EMERGENCY, CALL B.O.C. AT EXTENSION 8888 TO ADVISE THEM ACCORDINGLY AND REQUEST THAT THE ALARM BE RESET.  This will prevent the fire department and the internal fire crew from responding for burnt toast, or some other item.
      • If BOC does not get a call from tenant, they will call the apartment.  Please, for your safety, have a telephone plugged into the wall jack.  If BOC calls apartment and tenant does not answer, Hershey Fire Department will be dispatched.  If PSU/HMC is fined for false alarm and you as a tenant(s) were present and did not call/or answer, you will be charged accordingly.
    • EMERGENCY SITUATION:
      • If the alarm is a true emergency, go to the closest pull box and send in a second alarm.  Also, call B.O.C. (ext. 8888), if possible, from another apartment and inform them of the extent of the fire’s involvement. Make sure everyone has vacated the building.
      • Please do not tamper with the equipment.  The cost to replace or reinstall equipment removed to silence the alarm will be billed to the tenant(s).
      • A set of instructions has been mounted in each apartment documenting the B.O.C. number for non-emergencies, emergencies, etc.
      • If you have any questions regarding the system, please call the Housing Office at extension 8210. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.
  • University Manor Fire Suppression Systems
    • Every University Manor apartment is equipped with 5 lb ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher.
      • If you discover a fire: R.A.C.E is required
        • Rescue persons in immediate danger to safety. Warn others who are close to the fire.
        • Alarm the area by pulling the nearest fire alarm box AND dial the fire emergency phone number (8888). Give as much information to the call taker about the emergency and the exact type and location of the emergency.
        • Confine the fire and smoke by closing all doors and windows. DO NOT lock closed doors. DO NOT turn off lights.
        • Extinguish/Evacuate – If you have been trained and can do so safely, you may use a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire.
    • Every University Manor East apartment is equipped with fire suppression sprinkler heads.
      • These heads are heat sensitive and function automatically to suppress the fire until the fire department arrives on scene.
      • The sprinkler heads have been specifically placed throughout the apartment to insure proper suppression coverage in the event of a fire. Do not block, obstruct, or hang anything from a sprinkler head.
