Minimally Invasive Gynecological Surgery (MIGS)

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is a national leader in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS.) We are the region's only medical center with a women's healthcare specialty focusing on minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Dr Gerald Harkins is the Division Chief of the Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Program. He specializes in the treatment of women with uterine fibroids, abnormal or excessive uterine bleeding, as well as the medical and surgical treatment of women with endometriosis. The MIGS surgeons have the expertise to perform virtually all gynecologic surgeries via the minimally invasive/laparoscopic approach.

Laparoscopic minimally invasive procedures provide amazing benefits for our patients. Laparoscopic surgery offers less pain, faster recovery, and faster return to all activities. Surgery that used to routinely require 6 weeks to recover, now can be done faster and with less pain and a few "band aid" incisions and the patient may return to work in 1-2 weeks! Watch a video of one of our patients discussing the benefits of a laparoscopic approach to her gynecologic surgery.

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has state-of-the-art Olympus EndoALPHA Laparoscopic Suites for their surgeons to utilize. Dr Harkins also operates with the daVinci SI Surgical System.

Penn State is a leader in education, too. The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has the area's only fellowship specialty training program in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. The MIGS Fellowship Program provides an opportunity for gynecologic surgeons to come spend two years of extra training beyond their residency training to learn the most advanced techniques in laparoscopic gynecologic surgery.

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center developed a new innovative program to stimulate the interest of high school students in careers in the health care field. It is one of only four programs in the United States that provides live telesurgery partnerships for educational outreach. Dr. Harkins participates in the OR Live program. Here is the introductory video from the first session of Surgery Live, providing an overview of the many people who make up the surgical team.
