FAQ's

Following are the answers to some frequently asked questions about our program.

  1. We accept applications through ERAS. The latest date for submitting 2015-2016 applications is December 1, 2014.
  2. We have a total capacity of 16 pathology residents.  We do not have trouble filling vacant positions. Usually there are 4 positions filled each year.
  3. Interviews are generally conducted between October and January.  If an applicant is selected for an interview he/she will be contacted by email to arrange an interview date.
  4. We do accept International Medical Graduates and we do have current IMGs in the program. The only visa type we accept is J-1 visa.
  5. Work experience in a U.S. clinical laboratory is not required. We do not allow observerships in any department within our hospital.
  6. At this time, we have no limit with regard to year of medical school graduation; however, it is important that an applicant shows evidence of continual learning during any period of absence from the field of pathology and medicine.
  7. We have no minimal USMLE score and the number of attempts is not recorded.
  8. Step 1 scores are necessary to apply. Step 2 (CK and CS) exams must be taken, passed, and scores received by February 1, 2015. Step 3 scores are not necessary, but are helpful.
  9. Letters of reference from three individuals, as well as a letter from the Dean of your medical school are required.
  10. Most pathology rotations are done at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA, but other opportunities do exist. See above websites for additional information.
