Welcome to Penn State Hershey Pediatric Nephrology
The Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension team at the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital is an experienced group of physicians, nurses, dietitians and social workers who work together to provide evaluation and treatment to infants, children and teenagers with kidney disease or high blood pressure.
We are a division within the Department of Pediatrics at the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. We provide services in both the outpatient and inpatient setting and work closely with our physician colleagues in Pediatric Urology, Renal Transplantation, and Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine, as well as many other pediatric specialists to provide comprehensive care for children with all forms of acute or chronic kidney disease.
Although our outpatients are seen in the Pediatric Subspecialties Clinic in the University Physicians Center at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, we also offer monthly clinics at the Lancaster Regional Health Campus and in association with Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Common pediatric kidney problems include blood or protein in the urine, high blood pressure, congenital renal malformations, urinary tract infections and vesicoureteral reflux. Evaluation and treatment is provided for children with bedwetting or with daytime voiding problems. We also care for children with less common problems such as acute and chronic glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, renal tubular dysfunction, fluid and electrolyte disorders and cystinosis. The Pediatric Nephrologists at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital are particularly interested in the care of infants and children with acute and chronic renal failure, requiring dialysis or renal transplantation. Dialysis services for children have been offered at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center since 1978, and pediatric renal transplants have been performed in this institution since 1982. In the last 30 years, close to 100 children have received a kidney transplant as part of our chronic renal failure program.
