The pediatric weight management program at Hershey Medical Center involves a dietitian and physician by teaching kids to learn to take charge of their eating and exercise habits and learn tools for long-term lifestyle changes. We also refer to exercise physiology, cardiology (hypertension and lipid management) and child/adolescent psychology based on need. We also guide parents and caregivers in a positive supporting role for their child through clearly setting limits effectively. The basis of treatment for obesity in children and adolescents involves diet changes and exercise. It is important for parents and the adolescents to be ready and willing to make changes. The goal of treatment for young children may be to maintain their weight while they continue top grow taller. Weight reduction may be recommended for obese adolescents who have completed their growth or who are at high risk for obesity related diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, joint problems, etc.
