During their residency, the residents spend a total of three months in the PICU: one month as a PL-2, and one month as a PL-3 with an additional month of night call. During each month a PL-2, a supervisory PL-3 resident, and occasionally anesthesia and emergency department residents are assigned to the PICU. Both the PL-2 and PL-3 provide resident coverage every fourth night during the rotation, while PL-3’s assigned to the night call rotation also take call every fourth night. Continuity of resident care is assured by limiting night call responsibilities to only four individuals. Night call responsibilities normally begin after sign out rounds which occur daily at approximately 4:3O PM excluding weekends and end after morning rounds which occur daily at approximately 8 AM including weekends.
