Ultrasound
The Ultrasound Section of the Department of Radiology offers a wide range of diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures performed by board certified and fellowship trained radiologists in a facility accredited by the American College of Radiology. We perform sonography at the Hershey Medical Center, supporting our inpatients and surgical specialty clinics. Outpatient ultrasound studies are performed at our facilities on Hope Drive Monday through Friday (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Ultrasound imaging is performed in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sonographers are available in the hospital until 11 p.m. each night to facilitate the imaging needs of all of our patients. Emergency studies after 11 p.m. are performed on call. All of our sonographers are certified Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
Locations:
Penn State Hershey Medical Center

Scheduling of all outpatient ultrasound studies is available by calling (717) 531-3799.
Within the ultrasound section of the main hospital we perform ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of the thyroid, lymph nodes and other neck masses. Scheduling of biopsies first requires evaluation of imaging studies by one of our radiologists. This can be coordinated through ultrasound scheduling at (717) 531-1049. As the schedule allows, same-day service may be available for patients with clinical appointments in the medical center.
Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Studies:
Musculoskeletal ultrasound studies (including evaluation of tendons, rotator cuff, joints and soft tissue masses) are performed at the main hospital locations. (These studies are interpreted by the musculoskeletal section radiologists.) Scheduling of all musculoskeletal ultrasound studies is available by calling (717) 531-3799.
Obstetrical Sonography:
Obstetrical sonographic evaluations are limited to the emergent needs of our Emergency Medicine department. First trimester sonography is available at our outpatient facilities on 35 Hope Drive and Camp Hill.
Pediatric Sonography:
Our fellowship trained pediatric radiologists supervise and perform sonography on pediatric patients, from the newborn to the older teenager. These studies are scheduled at 531-3799. For more information please see our Pediatric Radiology Specialty Service.
Breast Ultrasound:
Breast ultrasound examinations (for women and men) are performed by the breast imaging faculty at the Penn State Hershey Breast Center.
