  • Echocardiogram - a test that uses ultrasound imaging (no radiation exposure) to take a picture of the heart and detect structural heart disease
    • Test time: 45 minutes
    • Patient preparation: None
  • Stress echocardiogram - a stress test, combining exercise on a treadmill with ultrasound imaging, to detect structural heart disease and coronary artery disease by visualizing the heart muscle before and immediately after exercise
    • Exam time: 60 minutes
    • Patient preparation: No caffeine on day of test; no food or drink 3 hours prior to test; wear comfortable shoes to walk on treadmill
  • Dobutamine stress echocardiogram - a stress test for those who cannot exercise on a treadmill; uses a chemical medication to simulate exercise by increasing a patient's heart rate, combined with ultrasound imaging to detect structural heart disease and coronary artery disease by visualizing the heart muscle before and immediately after simulated exercise
    • Exam time: 60 minutes
    • Patient preparation: No caffeine on day of test; no food or drink 4 hours prior to test
  • Electrocardiograms (EKG) - a non-invasive test that checks for problems with electrical activity of heart
    • Exam time: 10 minutes
    • Patient preparation: None
  • Event recorder - worn by patient for up to a month; self-activated heart monitor used to record the heart rhythm while experiencing symptoms of palpitations, dizziness, or loss of consciousness
    • Exam time: 30 minutes
    • Patient preparation: None
  • Exercise stress test - a test which utilizes EKG monitored treadmill exercise to assess a patient's heart rhythm, heart rate, and blood pressure to detect coronary artery disease
    • Exam time: 60 minutes
    • Patient preparation: No caffeine on day of test; no food or drink 3 hours prior to test; wear comfortable shoes to walk on treadmill
  • Holter monitor - a heart monitor worn for 24 hours to detect irregular heart rhythms in patients with symptoms of palpitations, dizziness or loss of consciousness
    • Exam time: 15 minutes
    • Patient preparation: None
